2006 A Banner Year for the Collaborative

Observations from Karin Jakubowski, Collaborative Coordinator:
This past December I celebrated my one year anniversary as Coordinator of the Science Center Collaborative. As I look back on the year's accomplishments, I am extremely honored to be working with an incredible group of people who are dedicated to educating the people of New England about the science of climate change and the local solutions individuals can take to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. We have had a productive year with many shared accomplishments which include:

- Over two hundred people attending one of the four Meet the Scientist Events held at the following locations:

  • The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut
  • Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill, Connecticut
  • ECHO at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont
  • The Harvard Museum of Natural History in Cambridge, Massachusetts

- One hundred and thirty five people attending one of the six Climate Change Backpack trainings that were held this year in Connecticut and Massachussets.

- Twelve Connecticut Science Centers involved in Cool It! The Climate Change Challenge a statewide competition for Connecticut middle and high school students who will create local solutions to climate change.

- Ten Connecticut Science Centers involved in the Clean Energy Climate Solutions Project to review, test, and evaluate off-the-shelf educational tools that teach about clean and renewable energy as a solution to climate change.

- Six New England and Connecticut member organizations involved in the Greening our Science Centers solutions-based program designed to track, quantify, and reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

- Four Connecticut Science Centers have developed a six week after-school program about climate change, reaching more than 500 students in 4th to 6th grade.

2007 already promises to be another amazing year. I look forward to sharing our continued adventures and successes with you all...
