Report Says Americans View Global Warming in Six Distinct Ways

A major report released in May details the American public’s stance on global warming. It is based on research conducted by the Yale Project on Climate Change and the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication which found that Americans fall into six divergent groups of engagement with the issue. The report, entitled “Global Warming’s Six Americas,” describes each classification and how they differ from one another. It can be downloaded at http://environment.yale.edu/uploads/6Americas2009.pdf

Forest Mammals on the move...

A recent study conducted by scientists at the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Ohio's Miami University reveals that species of forest mammals in Michigan are migrating northward, most likely due to climate change. Scientists studied distribution and abundance records of opossums and eight other small forest rodents, including flying squirrels, chipmunks, and mice. They found the historically southern species to be on the rise while the northern species appear to be fading. The report appears in the June issue of the journal "Global Change Biology,” as well as here: http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/may2009/2009-05-13-091.asp

CLIMATE CHANGE BACKPACK CHOSEN FOR PRESENTATION AT NATIONAL MARINE EDUCATORS CONFERENCE

Clean Air-Cool Planet's Karin Jakubowski will present the Climate Change Backpack, an innovative curriculum kit that may be used in the field, at the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA)’s 2009 annual conference. Educators from around the world will attend the conference, entitled One World Conserving One Ocean, to exchange ideas, learn the latest about ocean research and education, and network. It will take place from June 29-July 3, 2009 at Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, California and will highlight climate-related activities and resources, utilizing exceptional speakers, evening events, and field-based workshops.

PERRIN FAMILY GRANT AWARDED TO CA-CP FOR AFTER SCHOOL SCIENCE

The Perrin Family Foundation of Ridgefield, Connecticut recently awarded Clean Air-Cool Planet a grant of $10,000 to support after school climate-education programs offered by Northeast Science Center Collaborative (NESCC) in Fairfield County, Connecticut. NESCC is a program of Clean Air-Cool Planet designed to educate the public on global warming through programs at science and nature centers. Its afterschool programs combine cutting edge scientific research and the educational expertise of science centers to offer an interesting and appealing hands-on curriculum about climate change and global warming to fourth through sixth grade students. The Perrin Grant will cover the cost of working with three local science centers - the Stamford Museum and Nature Centre, the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, and the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport.
